Summer Solstice in Hampshire

A great day yesterday in the New Forest (and Salisbury Plain) featured butterflies as much as birds - it really felt like summer on a hot, sunny day in two of my favourite areas of England.

We spent several hours watching raptors: 5 Goshawks, 3 Red Kites and a juvenile Peregrine were the highlights (sadly no Honey Buzzards). Redstarts and Woodlarks in the New Forest were beautiful but the butterflies stole the show! Amongst the commoner species we found Silver-studded Blue in the Forest then White Admiral, Silver-washed Fritillary and White letter Hairstreak  in Bentley Wood.

Great catching up with Paul and taking my son Conor with us too.
