Finch Fest in the Forest of Dean!

Great birding in the Forest of Dean this morning, despite the murky weather. Marshy and I saw a group of Two-barred Crossbills - 5 males and 2 females near Crabtree Hill. This rare species is seldom seen on the UK mainland but this autumn there has been an influx from its regular breeding grounds in the taiga forests of Northern Russia. Other finch species included Brambling, Siskin, Redpoll, Common Crossbill and Hawfinch. We also saw a Great Grey Shrike, perched prominently in a nearby clearfell area.

We visited Chew Valley Lake for a couple of hours in the afternoon - Black-throated Diver and Lesser Scaup from Woodford bank, Long-tailed Duck near the dam, 3 Green Sandpipers and 2 Bewick's Swans at Heron's Green.
